The Zerstörer- & Nightfighter Units, Vol. 5
A Pictorial Documentation of the German Luftwaffe 1935–1945
Michael Meyer, Paul Stipdonk
The fifth volume of a six-part series on the so-called Zerstörer or “destroyer” and night fighter units of the German Luftwaffe from 1935–45. As in previous volumes, this work features literally hundreds of previously unpublished pictures depicting the aircraft, the flying personnel and, of course, the equally important ground personnel of the units covered as well as brief career details for all Verbandsführer including their fates as far as the scanty data available allows. This volume takes up the story with extensive photo coverage of 9./ZG 26. The text comprises in-depth photo captions detailing both the technical advances and tactical changes as the missions flown by the Me 110 evolved through the offensive to the defensive roles during the course of the war, all illustrated with many impressive photos. The reader is then guided via IV./ZG 26 to the highly interesting Ju 88-equipped V./KG 40, which carved out a reputation for long-range anti-shipping and U-boat escort sorties over the Bay of Biscay, through to I./ZG 52 and concluding with ZG 76 and its Me 410s in the defence of the Reich.
The numerical sequential organisation of this work means that it is heavily weighted towards the destroyer units – the only night fighter coverage touches on 10.(N) and 11.(N)/JG 72 to detail the very beginnings of the night fighter arm.
Modellers will once again find plenty of inspiration for their hobby in the photographs.
“This is our fifth volume of a six-part series on the so-called Zerstörer or “destroyer“ and night fighter units of the German Luftwaffe from 1935–45 – and the first to be published by JaPo. As was the case with our previous book ‘German Fighters in the West’, JaPo has exercised great care and no little skill to give us the best picture and print quality as is customary with this publisher.”
